Employee Spotlight: Meet Nicholas

Nicholas is a software developer and has been a member of the Paycom family since September 2016. Last week, I reached out and asked him to share his story.

Describe what you do.

I am a web developer here at Paycom, and I work on our software suite. Our software suite is developed completely in-house. It is an exciting role where you get to make a significant impact to the company. We work very hard to delivery what our clients need and want, and Paycom really values its employees so it is very rewarding!

Nick Employee SpotlightWhat advice would you give a new employee for being successful at Paycom?

Use your resources. Paycom has a lot of them, including job training, the LEAD program, the Leadership Library, podcasts, the gym, multiple free fitness programs, tech talks and great people. People are a huge resource. We have some very intelligent people here at Paycom, in all areas of the company. Make friends; it will help you immensely. Also, the more friends you have, the more free food you will find out about in the breakrooms.

What’s the one word you would choose to describe Paycom, and why?

Homegrown. I love the history and the story behind how we came about, right here, in my native Oklahoma. It is amazing to work in the same building as the founder/CEO, and then go to the gym and play basketball with the CIO.

What is your greatest accomplishment at Paycom?

About a month after joining, I was assigned to work on a new feature that actually affected the visual layout of the tool, and it was a really cool experience. When it all came together, I could see my work in place, I knew how it all functioned behind the scenes, and I knew that the customers who requested the feature were getting access to a solution that would make their lives easier. It was a very satisfying experience.

What makes you proud to work at Paycom?

I’m very proud of the do-it-right attitude we have. I know my team leader in particular sets the example  of quality work. You can tell he really cares. He isn’t just trying to get things done; he wants to get things done well. That cascades down and empowers each of us to really take pride in our work and give it our best. Also, getting things done right requires us to know what “right” really means, and when that is encouraged from the top down, it really leads to a lot of growth for everyone. Someday, I hope to be a leader so I can have my turn to help new individuals that come after me.

Where has been your favorite place to travel, and why?

I had a summer internship in Livermore, Calif., where I worked at the national laboratory to evaluate a technology patent. I loved every part of it. Livermore was beautiful, and my team was smart. Also, we had the opportunity to meet with many really inspiring people, and visit many of the surrounding cities. We were the first pilot group to go there. It was a wonderful experience and such an adventure.

What are some of your favorite hobbies outside of work?

I feel like I’m pretty good at ping-pong, and I’ve been working on my volleyball skills every Tuesday at the Paycom gym. I’m considering giving up on basketball. I dream of being a traveler and overall adventurer, but mostly I sit around obsessing about why people do and think what they do. I find it endlessly fascinating.

If you could wake up tomorrow having gained one quality or ability, what would it be and why?

Wow, what a question! Well, my childhood wish was to be able to fly like Superman, but now that I know all the dangers of flying around without any kind of protection, I’ll say I would like to gain the ability to solve any problem. I really like helping others, and I dream of saving humanity, so that would be a nice one to have.
